Simon the Digger's personal machine, Gurren Lagann, is actually two Gunmen (the name given to mecha in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann) combined into one.

The first component is "Lagann," a small machine that alone is not a very strong fighter, but has the incredible power to take control of other machines and adapt them into its fighting power. It can generate drills from its arms and head, and can also create a large one from its lower body that it has used to both attack and hijack other machines. Lagann also has incredibly powerful rocket boosters capable of launching it high into the sky.

The second piece is "Gurren," a Gunman that Simon's fallen mentor and "bro" Kamina swiped from an attacking Beastman early in the series. On its own, Gurren can be a decent combatant boasting great strength and armor, as well as the ability to utilize the sunglasses mounted on its face as a blade.

When they combine, the two Gunmen become Gurren Lagann. Gurren Lagann is at its most efficient when piloted by two people, with one person for each Gunman, but Simon is fully capable of piloting the entire combined machine on his own. In fact, once Simon realized his own place in the world after the death of Kamina, Gurren Lagann is always left combined in a single form. Both are considered his machines, and the co-pilot is something which is rotated.

If Gurren is damaged by itself uncombined with Lagann, damage on the bigger machine will be repaired when they combine into Gurren Lagann.

Lagann, and thus Gurren Lagann, is powered by an infinite energy source called "Spiral Power." Spiral Power itself is driven to be more and more powerful by sheer force of will and determination, something Simon has in great supply. A pilot who cannot use Spiral Power (such as Viral) can be a co-pilot in Gurren's seat, but they will add no Spiral energy to Gurren Lagann as a whole. Spiral Power is a requirement to start Lagann up and be the primary pilot of Gurren Lagann as a whole. Lagann can only be started up by the Core Drill which Simon wears on him at all times, too.

In TTGL, Gurren Lagann's power is infinitely evolving due to Lagann's ability to adapt itself to other machines. Of course, that has the ability for exploitation in game, so it will remain in its standard form from Simon's canon point, which is just after the mid-series timeskip. Neither Lagann nor the combined Gurren Lagann will have the ability to hijack and adapt themselves to other machines.

Gurren Lagann's primary ability is to produce drills of varying shapes and sizes. They can erupt from nearly anywhere on its body, and can also be used as projectiles. Just as they can with Gurren alone, Gurren Lagann can use his sunglasses as a sword or boomerang.

Kamina and Simon have managed to manifest the following special abilities in Gurren Lagann over time -

GIGA DRILL BREAK - Gurren Lagann's primary finishing attack. All of Gurren Lagann's energy is manifested to create a giant drill many times its own size after pinning an enemy in the air with its boomerang. Gurren Lagann then rockets forward, propelled by energy and the force of the spinning drill into its target.

GIGA DRILL MAXIMUM - A technique in which Gurren Lagann sprouts massive drills from all over its body to attack enemies in all directions, as well as defend attacks from all directions. This is an "all or nothing" attack, as Gurren Lagann is left drained of power and even damaged after executing it. It's basically a panic button, and if there's anything left around after the fact Simon would be easy pickings.

DOUBLE BOOMERANG SPIRAL - Flinging both Gurren Lagann's sunglasses and wings forward as boomerangs.

Simon can use his drills for defense as well as attack, to the point of even being able to flatten one into a shield. Gurren Lagann has very good resistance against attack, but is not invincible. It can fly with the wings adopted from a machine in Lordgenome's forces. Naturally, it can also burrow underground excellently and at a very rapid pace.

Later in the series Simon also showed the ability to rip holes in time and space to transport Gurren Lagann across great distances. This ability will not be present here.
